Pets Are Family Too: How to Include Them in Your Family Session
There is something about a family photo session that already asks a lot. You’re getting everyone dressed, managing the logistics, hoping the kids cooperate, and somewhere in the middle of all of that, your dog is staring at you with those eyes. The ones that say: I want to come too. And honestly? Bring them! Pets are woven into the fabric of daily family life in a way that is real, warm and worth remembering. Including them in your session does not have to be chaotic or complicated. With a little preparation, it can be one of the most natural and meaningful parts of your whole experience.
Why Including Your Pet Just Makes Sense
Pets change the energy of a session in the best way. They give kids something to focus on other than the camera. They give parents a reason to laugh. They add texture and life to images that might otherwise feel a little too still.
But beyond the practicality, there is something deeper here. Your pet is part of your family's story right now. They are in your mornings, your evenings, your slow Sunday afternoons. Leaving them out of your family photos means leaving out a piece of what your life actually looks like.
One of the most meaningful sessions I have had was with a gentleman and his older dog. We spent the day at the beach together - just the two of them - and the images we made that day became something he treasures. That session was not about perfect light or perfect behavior. It was about honoring a bond that mattered. That is exactly why I believe pets belong in this work.
The Honest Challenge (and Why It Is Worth It)
Yes, pets can be unpredictable. Dogs especially. They get excited, they want to sniff everything, they don’t always look at the camera on cue. And that is completely okay!
The sessions that include pets are rarely the most controlled, but are often the most alive. A dog bounding toward a child, a cat curled into a lap, the way a family relaxes when their animal is nearby - these are the kinds of moments that make photographs feel like home.
The key is not controlling your pet during the session. The key is a little thoughtful preparation before we even meet.
How to Prepare Your Pet for a Smooth Session
This is where a little planning goes a long way. Here are my suggestions:
Take Your Pet for a Long Walk Beforehand
This is the single most helpful thing you can do. A tired dog is a calm dog. Before we meet, take them on a good, long walk so some of that energy has already been released. It makes a real difference in how relaxed and present they are once we start.
Bring Treats
Lots of them. Treats help redirect attention, reward calm behavior and honestly just make the whole experience more fun. Your pet will be more at ease and you will have a built-in way to get them to look in a general direction.
Let Go of Expectations
Your pet does not need to sit perfectly still or look at the camera. They just need to be there, doing what they do. Some of the best images happen when a dog wanders into frame unexpectedly or when a child chases them across a field. Let it unfold. That is where the good stuff lives.
What These Photos Become
Right now, in the middle of your daily life, your pet probably feels like a constant. They are just there - at the door when you get home, curled at the foot of the bed, somewhere underfoot in the kitchen. It is easy to forget that this, too, is a season.
Pets age. Family dynamics shift. Kids grow up and the dog who used to keep up with them starts moving a little more slowly. The images you make now - the ones that include your whole family, animals included - become something different over time. They become evidence of a life that was full and connected and real. Photos to cherish.
That is what I am here to help you hold onto.
